Renowned for merging cutting edge sounds with vintage accents, Sebo K is both mobilee’s longest serving artist and its beating heart of house music.

Sebo K is a unique and influential figure within Berlin’s densely populated music community; both crowd-pleasing and credible, he is a bona fide tastemaker who distinguishes himself by exploring the connective threads between classics from Chicago and Detroit, and modern European tech house, minimal, and rolling percussive grooves.

Sebo K launched his DJ career in early-90s Berlin, as an integral member of Alec Empire’s Bass Terror, the city’s first UK-style drum & bass and breakbeat club nights. By the middle of the decade Sebo K had fallen under the spell of stateside artists like DJ Sneak, Glenn Underground and Mood II Swing, and his growing love for Chicago house and Detroit techno began to reveal itself within his club appearances throughout the city. Sebo K has been a resident DJ for internationally renowned Berlin club Watergate since 2002, and through his ‘Sebo K and Friends’ nights, his relentless international touring schedule, and with mobilee’s Back Up Vol. 1 and Watergate’s 04 mixes to his credit, a growing legion of fans both close to home and further afield has been captivated by his unique mix of the old and the new.

Despite a relatively limited discography of original productions, quality over quantity has always been the credo for Sebo K. His debut for mobilee, Too Hot, recalled an era of underground warehouse anthems and launched the then-fledgling imprint into the stratosphere. Its follow-up, the instant classic collaboration with Anja Schneider, Rancho Relaxo, established Sebo K as the up-and-comer worthy of close attention, further cemented by his breakout hits “Diva” on mobilee, and “Saxtrack” for Cecille. Alongside his timeless original productions, Sebo K has remixed some of the most respected labels and artists on the planet, including Poker Flat, Mule Electronic, Radioslave and Efdemin.

Effortlessly transitioning from deep soulfulness, to tough stripped-down sounds, and back again, Sebo K has reinforced the enduring importance of house music throughout the perpetual cycles of trends, and this ability to command a club crowd has been equaled by his exceptional productions.

As Sebo K continues on his journey with mobilee, his rising tide of successes reflects the the vision, passion, and love of music that drives him and the extended mobilee team in all that they do, and all that will come.

Well the feedback we received from our last party with Hector & Alex Arnout was incredible…I think everyone agrees that it was our best party to date!

So we thought it was only fair to that we bring you another seriously strong line up and invited messers SEUIL & HUXLEY to join us for what promises to be another Party to remember!

SEUIL (Eklo, Circus Company, Hello?Repeat)

Seuil is that kind of mysterious artist, ones know he’s talented, great DJ, authentic producer, but remained underestimated for a while within the international deep house landscape. And all of this inspite of some high level releases on Minibar, Moon Harbour, Lessizmore or the late lamented Dan Ghenacia’s Freak N Chic.

Seuil was a DC10 regular over the summer, with his track ‘Ultravision’ being one of the biggest bombs of 2011.

Concerning his solo projects, a new EP will be out very soon on Circus Company and another one on Ultrastrech (Sammy Dee’s new label), there’s also a remix for the next Lee Foss coming on Culprit and a couple of other records are announced later this year on Supplements Facts and Hello Repeat. A quite filled agenda, considering he is also currently working on his new album.

HUXLEY (Hypercolour, Saints & Sonnets)

Huxley is leading the way as one of the new breed of UK house producers making their mark on the scene.

After a successful debut with fellow Londoner and frequent collaborator “Ethyl” on Nick Curly’s Cecille Numbers, more success was to follow on the UK institution that is Tsuba with “Mother Tounge” EP in 2010. Now standing on his own two feet, EP’s with Morris Audio, Losing Suki & Hypercolour followed, not forgetting a host of remixes under his belt from some of Europe’s elite labels and artists.

Huxley is seriously one to watch and we can’t wait to have him down!

Support on the night will be coming from DANKOSS (Street Deep) and the BadApple Resident’s.

Line up:

- SEUIL (Eklo, Circus Company, Hello?Repeat)

- HUXLEY (Hypercolour, Saints & Sonnets)

- DANKOSS (Street Deep)

- JOSEF LUPO (Tokyo on Acid / Tackside Audio)

- DAVE HARBOUR

- DAVE COLEMAN

- S.T.RUGGS

Entry:

£5 Early Bird Tickets, £7 Guest list – email full names to – badapplelondon@gmail.com

SASSE (15 Years Of Moodmusic Records)
MARIO BASANOV (Needwant Records)
KETOLOCO DJs

We’ve been really quiet in London since last summers Light Bar shindigs so we thought we’d throw a party. Seen as it’s mid-winter and freezing at the moment it’s fitting we launch our annual ‘Polar Party’. It’s basically an excuse to rave in your favourite ski wear, silly hats, penguin costumes….Whatever! We’ll also be bringing in a snow machine for extra effect.

Funktion One Sound
Dress code: ski wear, silly hats, penguin costumes…

TICKETS:
- £5 Early Bird Tickets (limited to 50)
- £8 Genreral Admission

__________________________

Words:

Ketoloco decided to return to its native Leeds to celebrate 5 years in existence, and for that reason have been rather quiet in the capital since last summer’s terrace parties. Now, though, they return; return to Basing House for a Polar Party with Moodmusic boss Sasse, rising talent Mario Basanov and of course the ‘Loco DJs all playing.

The idea is to get everyone together in their winter gear; ski jackets, crazy hats, penguin costumes – whatever takes your fancy and whatever will best suit the fact on the night there will be fake snow machines blasting from all directions. The venue itself is a suitably raw and personal space kitted out with full Funktion One sound and coming over as a nice modern antecedent to the early days of cellar partying with which this crew made their name.

Headliner, Ketoloco favourite and Moodmusic boss Sasse likes to go deep. His label celebrates 15 years in 2012 – 15 years of fresh house, disco tinged tech and various other styles of 4/4 as produced by close associates like Henrik Schwarz and Nick Chacona – expect melody and plenty of groove and you’ll not be left wanting.

Meanwhile, says Ketoloco main man Chris Halliday of next booking, Needwant man and Lithuanian producer Mario Basanov… “He’s the most exciting producer I’ve heard in a while. He’s taken the crap, disco-tinged, obvious sound and made it better. Very strong productions, very musical – acid stuff, atmospheric stuff, electro influences, diverse.”

All in all, then, this party’s set to be cooler than a cool thing on vacation at an Icelandic nudist colony.

A huge shout to everyone who came down to see Marcel Fengler tear up Basing House for our December party – by far the best event we’ve ever done.

Make Me are moving things forward in a big way in 2012 and keeping up the lineup pressure with some of the most respected names in underground club music.

Kicking off the year we have two of North America’s finest laying down the beats:

DVS1 – Hush, Klockworks

DVS1’s meteoric rise over the past few years has been nothing short of astonishing. The shift from local hero DJ/producer/promoter in the US mid-west to solo releases on Ben Klock’s Klockworks imprint and extended sets at Berghain is quite a transition, but one that is richly deserved.

His DJ philosophy is that genre distinctions aren’t important—the emotional content of the music is. This focus is readily apparent in the way he moves crowds—both literally and figuratively by fusing together sounds that paint coherent, evocative, and powerful moods that are always appropriate for the time and place he is playing.

We’ll be giving Zak 3 hours on the Basing House Funktion 1 rig to show us what all the fuss is about.

Bill Patrick – Supplement Facts

This is a man who knows how to move a dancefloor.

After a long stint in New York playing at such seminal venues as The Limelight, Vinyl and Arc, Bill is finally beginning to build the international reputation he so richly deserves.

We first saw him play back in August in a strip club in Bethnal Green. Quite the introduction, and without doubt it was one of the most accomplished sets that we saw in the whole of 2011. House, techno, rnb, whatever it was the place was going off for the duration.

Tickets: http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?327499

Basing House Can Do No Wrong – Our Club of Choice

I distinctly remember my first encounters with 25 Kingsland Road. It was 2005, I was 22 and had a collection of fluro leggings that put American Apparel’s S/S 2009 collection to shame. I also had an obsession with appargiated bass lines and Miss Kitten style lyrics that saw me prance into Trailer Trash at On The Rocks on a weekly basis. Transvestites to the left, shoulder thrusts to the right, I was in the middle of electro clash heaven. Resident Hannah Holland would take her place in the odd motorway toll style booth while the queues of young, creative freaks that resembled the cast of The Rocky Horror Picture Show trickled through in their masses. Inside, a packed, dark, sweaty room and some of the most horrendous toilets you’ll ever have the misfortune of squatting in became a magical playground. The music was a mix between electro, disco, house and techno with a sprinkling of acidic pop for good measure. It was…FABULOUS.

Trailer Trash at On The Rocks – 2008 – Photo courtesy of Christopher James for weknowwhatyoudidlastnght.com

Eventually and inevitably, times moved on and by 2009 my leggings wore away to have the elasticity of an old piece of chewing gum and On The Rocks had lost its charm, crowds and heyday. Instead, I found my forefinger twitching to minimal in darkened warehouses and it appeared that the owners of 25 Kingsland Road may well have written their own fate by calling themselves ‘On The Rocks’ as that’s precisely what the venue became. At some point in 2009 (I think) it became The Sports Bar, a monstrous place with gazillions of flat screen TV’s and Shoreditch city boys necking pints of Stella and “oi’oi’oing” at other men running around a football pitch (I can only assume this as I never went inside, but that’s what I like to think it was like) – 25 Kingsland Road dropped off our club radar entirely. Whilst The Sports Bar was a cataclysmic error it was also a blessing in disguise for Jason Colbert and Chris Bird who now run the refurbished venue; its insignificance in the underground music scene meaning that when Basing House opened in 2011 – it felt like a brand spanking new venue had arrived. Just in the nick of time too with TBar long gone, Nomad demising by the second and the council getting their evil claws into just about every warehouse space in East London.

In January 2011 Jason Colbert was running a party called Detail and in search of a space to hold his event, he stumbled across the loft area of Basing House. After three parties, Jason and Chris Bird (who used to manage 54 on Commercial Road) managed to convince the owner of Basing House that if the downstairs bar was transformed into the blank canvas dance vibe of the loft, Basing House could reclaim its place as a clubbing venue. “The first few months were really tough” explains Jason, “Sunday mornings when the bar closed we’d be in there working until Thursday’s, stripping the walls back to their original brick work – one little corner at a time, week by week.” Getting the right promoters to aspire to have their events at Basing House was no easy task either. “You’ve only got one chance to show promoters round, and showing them a half refurbished venue was tough. In the beginning the parties that we were getting weren’t quite what we were aiming for. We really struggled for the first few months to be honest.”

Basing House Roof Terrace – 2011

As 2011 entered its summer the transformation of Basing House was complete with brand new lighting, air conditioning, a smoking terrace and the unnecessary cocktail bar stripped back to good old basics. Most importantly though, a Funktion 1 sound system, Allen & Heath mixer, turntables and CDJ 2000’s now spanned the entire length of the back wall, emphasizing Jason and Chris’s priority and focus for Basing House – the music. Nights began to draw attention with the new music policy bringing a selection of house, disco and techno events run by some of East London’s most forward thinking promoters. Nearing the end of last year, that once fabulous venue was finally reliving its calling agrees events manager Jason, “November was a turning point, we started to get the parties we were after and the crowds that we wanted. It’s nice to see parties that have been strict warehouse parties for years now holding their events here“. Joined by Chris in the role of promotions manager, they have an in-house promotions team and believe in treating events as if they were their own, making sure the promoters and artists receive as much support as they can give. In a recent interview with Club Focus they explained, “We see it as a necessity that we promote the music, artists and labels we love. We are genuine fans and hope this comes across in how we carry ourselves as a venue. We’re music lovers so the most important aspect has to be staying true to that. A huge amount of thanks have to be paid to the promoters we work with.”

Those promoters are increasing rapidly with Hypercolour, Bread & Butter, Make Me, Voyage and Simmer being just a handful of Basing House’s bi-monthly promotions. At not even a year old, the new DJ set up has seen the likes of Chez Damier, Kenny Larkin, Tim Xavier, Voigtmann, Redshape, jozif, Seuil, Will Saul, Wildkats and many more perform their trickery behind the decks to a full house of mature, electronic music lovers.

Mooch 3rd birthday featuring Tim Xavier at Basing House – 2012 – Photo courtesy of Daddy’s Got Sweets

In the lead up to their first birthday celebrations this June, Basing House have already secured events such as A Night With…Sebo K, Deep’Art with Krankbrothers & Corey Baker, Make Me with Dvs1 & Bill Patrick, Excuse the Mess with Harry Klein’s Ana and the long running Phonica will take up their new bi-monthly slot. Six years after I first stepped foot into 25 Kingsland Road things have changed dramatically. Those appargiated bass lines are now warm and deep, electro pop is now house tech, Miss Kitten’s lyrics have been replaced by live appearances from the likes of Robert Owens and the freaks of 2005 are now, well, the freaks of 2012. One aspect of that era is back though…It is FABULOUS once again.

After our great and successful Saturday night with Oskar Offermann and Voigtmann, Voyage is back to Thursdays at the Basing House. This time I found our guest trough listening to music from his own label Phil at one very special afternoon one month ago. He took my full attention with his moody, melodic, jazzy, dark and organically composed sound. He currently manages Team Records and Phil as well as being responsible for the A&R. He released on Ware, Treibstoff (Kompakt), 3rd wave, Bedrock and many other labels. Come and join us from 09:00pm till 02:00am at Basing House.

We catch up with Promotions Managers Chris Bird and Jason Colbert to find out all about this relatively new addition to the East London club scene.

THE FACTS

What: Basing House
Where: 25 Kingsland Road, Shoreditch, London, E2 8AA
Nights: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Some Sundays.
Music: Contemporary electronic music.
Door price/policy: Anywhere from free to £15. Most events have early bird tickets available from £5 and the vast majority go no higher than £10 on the door. Concessionary guestlist also available for nearly every party.
Drinks prices: Average London club prices

TEN MINUTES WITH PROMOTIONS MANAGERS CHRIS BIRD AND JASON COLBERT

Basing House is a relatively new addition to the East London club scene – What was your original vision for the venue and have you achieved this yet?
When we started out the goal was to create an intimate one roomed venue, with a stripped back aesthetic and to give as much focus to the music as possible. We wanted to give promoters a venue that offered a great platform for them to host their parties. There is still a lot we wish to do with Basing House, so it is by no means a finished project and there will still be additions in the coming months. We’d like to think the brand can be trusted to consistently provide interesting and unique events. In every walk of life it’s important to repeatedly set new goals and we do not see the venue as a complete product yet. Even if we are still here in 10 years, it will still be very much a work in progress.

Do you think there was a need for a smaller capacity club with a focus on underground nights?
Yeah, most definitely. We don’t believe there are many venues of our size that you could turn up, off the cuff and kind of know exactly what you’d be getting. This goes back to that trust thing and Basing House now being recognised for its slant towards underground music. We think the fact that we have now become home to a number of revered events, which were scattered around, kind of proves this. We are also very lucky to be situated in a city with such an open minded approach towards music and this of course makes it much more viable than in other areas. We offer a home to what is essentially a niche and the size of Basing House gives it a nice and intimate setting.

What is your music policy?
All the events at the venue are focused around contemporary electronic music. Be it house, disco or techno, it is always on the underground tip. We still get really excited when a promoter tells us the line up for a party and we feel extremely blessed to have had the calibre of artist that is again and again being brought through. The coming months are no exception either and there are more than a few exciting bookings on the cards. Quality control is always at the top of the agenda and we have an amazing team of promoters that we share the same musical ideals with. We feel honoured to be working alongside them.

Who has been a particular highlight and why?
There have been so many great nights now and we have witnessed some astounding DJ sets. It’s hard to pin down one particular highlight however, the Needwant night with Robert Owens and Nicholas was more than a little bit special. Robert Owens had this huge stage presence. When he plugged the mic in and you heard this unbelievably soulful voice, combined with such a charismatic persona, you just knew you were in the company of a legend. I’ve still got vinyl’s at my mums house of Robert’s, so to have him play at Basing House was a great feeling. He wasn’t just playing classics but, when he sang the first couple of lines of ‘I’ll Be Your Friend”, the club erupted.

You have many inviting elements to the venue such as a Funktion 1 soundsystem and roof terrace, but what do you think is the major USP that keeps the crowds coming back every weekend?
We think that providing consistently strong line-ups has not gone a miss. We feel the venue has the right environment but, without the music, it doesn’t really mean anything. We are music lovers so the most important aspect has to be staying true to this. A huge amount thanks have to be paid to the promoters we work with for expressing this on a weekly basis. The sum of almost anything can broken down into parts and it’s this attention to every detail that we feel holds us in good stead.

You have been likened to Ibizian institution DC10, do you think this comparison is correct and if so why do you think that is?
DC10 is one of the greatest venues to have ever opened its doors and has a great history. It’s of course very flattering to be mentioned in same vein but, to be compared with them though, is perhaps a bit far fetched. Maybe it’s to do with the red lit dark room and music policy however, DC10 is a legendary institution and we are some way off that just yet.

2011 was a great year for Basing House with a new refurbishment and a Best London Club Award, what do you think was a defining high for the venue?
There have been many, so it’s a tough question. Winning the award was of course an amazing feeling for all involved. When you are so deeply involved with something, it’s sometimes hard to give an honest appraisal on what you’re doing. To receive the award was obviously a sign that things are moving in the right direction. On the whole, we think selling out New Years Eve in advance, and it being such a great night, was one that rounded off the year perfectly. We had big ambitions when we started the venture and to end the year on that high was a moment that will always be cherished.

Similarly, did you encounter any disasters or obstacles that you have overcome?
We have been lucky to work with a very professional team over the last few months, so there have never been any massive hiccups. There was one night in the beginning where the whole of the power tripped though, as we had not considered the extra load that all the extra DJ equipment, sound and lighting etc brings with it. It’s safe to say that for a couple of minutes we were petrified, but to everyone’s relief, managed to get things back up and running again. A problem is only a problem if it is not fixed and the very next day we got another electrical line put in.

You’ve recently set up a YouTube channel and are regularly promoting podcasts from many of the nights you host, are you looking to be more of a holistic music outlet rather than just a venue?
As a musically focused venue, we see it as a necessity that we promote the music, artists and labels we love. We are genuine fans and hope this comes across in how we carry ourselves as a venue. We will soon be providing mixes, on a weekly scale, of live sets recorded from Basing House. We are going to try and record absolutely everyone; it is just down to getting the necessary clearance.

Finally, what does 2012 have in-store for the venue?
More of the same really. We will definitely be keeping up the consistency and where possible, try to go a step further. We think that the upcoming programme of events proves this. Like I mentioned earlier, there will be one or two little tweaks going on inside and these will come into affect very soon. We will also be having our first Birthday party in June and can’t wait to get cracking with that. The Thursdays will be going up a level in 2012 and we are itching to announce what is planned there. There is also something VERY exciting that we’d love to reveal, but would get in a lot of trouble, so you’ll have to keep checking back for when that drops. If we are still standing strong in 12 months time it would have been a good year.

B&B: When were you first introduced to electronic music?

Redshape: Roughly ’94. I started to DJ 2 years later.

B&B: How would you say your tastes have evolved since the start of Redshape? Have there been any specific big shifts?

Redshape: No, no big shifts – not even minor ones. OK, theUK scene had an extra influence over the last 1-2 years, rather than. I still love that dirty house techno vibe from the beginning.

B&B: Your sound is definitely influenced by different genres of music. Can you tell me why you think it’s important for producers and electronic music producers in particular to have an open mind to music of all styles and genres?

Redshape: I won’t judge people doing what they have to do – but – as a comparison to painted art, it’s like as if you watched only one, probably really nice, painting all your life – and then suddenly decide to achieve its magic by trying to copy it. Different angles are always the key to creating something special yet close to your own complexity.

B&B: What drives your creativity mostly; what gets you up and writing new music day after day?

Redshape: Good question, once I get behind I gonna be more productive! if I meet interesting people during my travels or have a nice demanding time in general, something in me awakens and wants to express itself musically – no idea how to switch that on though.

B&B: Your new project “Palisade” saw its first release last year in May on Laid Records. Why change monikers? What was the thinking behind that?

Redshape: I actually wanted to create a new label, but the lovely guys from Laid kind of convinced me going another route. At that time I really needed a break from “fast forward” – so i decided to build a “Palisade” around some deep deep areas in me and see what happens.

B&B: You are quite regular at London’s Fabric nightclub playing for a big audience. Basing House, at the moment, is probably the best small underground venue in London. How do you feel performing to an intimate crowd?

Redshape: I love intimate crowd and venues – all the best moments I can remember happened in such places.

So – yeah I’m really looking forward – as music tends to get more intimate as well - from time to time.

B&B: About your live show at Basing House…how it will works and the setups you are currently running?

Redshape: My traditional setup, Faderfox – drum controller, UC – 8 channel (harmony) mixing desk, Octatrack – extra live drums & stuff & a 4 channel DJ mixer to put all this together. No prepared breaks or arrangements, only 1 bar loops, 1 hit samples sequenced and arranged live.

B&B: What else can we expect from Redshape in the near future?

Redshape: Next will be my release on Martyn’s 3024 label and a remix I did for him on Brainfeeder. As soon I’m finished with this interview I’m gonna continue working on the new album, which hopefully will be done (written / produced) till March / April. I aim for a 2nd half 2012 release.

After probably the best party in our 3 years, our birthday in November really set the bar. Massive out to all you lovely lot who made it so rowdy and a here’s a little peak for those that missed…

But new year, new start and all… so we are set to take things up higher in 2012 with a selection to out bunga anything dubious Italian prime ministers can muster. First up is an undisputed legend in electronic music, the mighty Chez Damier. Chicago born, Detroit bred, he is a keystone in the history of both house and techno. In support will be a special joint session from our main man Richard Adam and sometime esteemed guest and good friend Josh Silver, who have taken their double act out of the after party and rocked it on both sides of London.

CHEZ DAMIER

KMS, The Music Institute, Prescription Records… these pivotal moments are why Chez Damier is considered one of the most important and influential figures in the scene, whilst a catalog that includes the likes of ‘Morning Factory’, ‘I Feel Rhythm’ and of course ‘Can You Feel It’ are not only stone cold classics but are held up as unparalleled exemplars of the house music genre.

Every nascent music scene needs an outlet and when Chez opened the Music Institute in Detroit in the late 80′s it proved just as important for the development of techno in the city as The Warehouse and The Music Box in Chicago. After managing the KMS studio and label for Kevin Saunderson, he returned to his hometown of Chicago and alongside Ron Trent created a true musical legacy. The early 90′s saw Chez N Trent’s seminal releases on their own Prescription imprint craft a brand new blueprint, and define a sound for what would become known as deep house. After an extended break from the industry, the man is back is back in full effect. With a series of releases on German label Mojuba and his own Balance Alliance project, it is his triumphant return to the decks that is cementing his legendary status as a DJ. 2011 has seen him grace the likes of Rex, Panorama Bar and Tokyo’s Eleven club and we are chomping at the bit to host a very special 3hr live performance.
